Pazin, the capital of the Istrian County, is located in the heart of Istria. The town is dominated by a castle, a medieval fortress above a 130-meter-deep abyss where the Pazinčica River flows into the Pazin Cave. It was the inspiration for Jules Verne to set part of his 1885 novel "Mathias Sandorf" there.
