Synopsis
The adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s novella, directed by Dover Koshashvili, is set in a coastal resort in the Caucasus. Andrew Scott plays a fallen aristocrate Laevski, whose life revolves around alcohol and gambling, while Fiona Glascott masterfully plays his torn lover. Their passive relationship arouses the rage of his friend Von Koren, a scientist who challenges Laevsky to a duel. Visually, the film weaves impressive compositions and lighting shots, and critics praised it for its characters and photography. It stands out for its elegant period set design and sophisticated adaptation which brings Chekhov to life with a faithful, yet visually rich performance.
