Synopsis
Director István Szabó's biographical historical drama “Oberst Redl” is a successful adaptation of “A Patriot for Me” by J. Osborne, filmed in Pula. The film is about the life and fall of Alfred Redl, and Austro-Hungarian officer and spy at the beginning of the 20th century. Through a tense drama, it depicts his internal conflicts, betrayal, and tragic fate in the imperial system. The film explores loyalty, betrayal and political intrigues, while presenting the atmosphere before World War I and the complexity of historical events which shaped it.
In Cannes in 1985, it received the Jury Prize, and in 1986, the BAFTA Award, as well as nominations for the Oscar and the Golden Globe for the best film from a non-English-speaking region.
