Pula is the largest city in Istria, located in the very south of the Istrian peninsula, and is known for its numerous ancient monuments, the most famous of which is the 1st-century Arena (Amphitheatre). The 19th-century fortifications testify to the importance of Pula as the most important port of the Austro-Hungarian Navy. The Pula Film Festival in the Arena is widely known.
