Synopsis

“Titus”, the first feature film adaptation of Shakespeare’s tragedy “Titus Andronicus”, was directed by Julie Taymor. Anthony Hopkins stars as Titus, a Roman general who returns after defeating the Goths and faces the brutal sacrilege: throne, murders, sexual violence and punishment. The film places the classic text in an anachronistic world – a mix of ancient Rome and Mussolini's Italy, with modern elements such as spokespeople and vehicles. It evokes desolation and darkness through torture, conspiracies, cannibalism and grotesque. Hopkins plays with titanic power, while Taymor uses stylized visual effects, enriched with costumes, set design, and musical and choreographic rhythm, leading to mixed reviews, but also cult status.
